The Health Professions Act is umbrella legislation that provides for a common regulatory structure for British Columbia's health professions. The Act establishes how the colleges are to be governed and what activities they can undertake. The Act also authorizes college boards to make bylaws that establish provisions related to the nomination, election and removal of board members.
On April 10, 2015, the CRNBC Board approved amendments related to:
Section 1.0: Definitions
Section 1.03: Eligibility for Election to the Board
Section 1.09: Removal of Elected Board Member
In accordance with the Health Professions Act requirements, information on the Bylaw amendments is posted on the CRNBC website and also distributed to the Ministry of Health and other regulatory colleges.
The Board is committed to ensuring CRNBC's governance practices support and follow leading practice, including the
Seven Principles of Public Life1 while still meeting its legislated mandate, the College's
Strategic Plan and Strategic Themes and the expectations of stakeholders, such as the public.
Currently, CRNBC relies on conflict of interest guidelines to provide clarity and guidance to individuals seeking election (or appointment) to its Board. The same guidelines offer support for Board members in rendering their decisions and in guiding discussions and dialogue.
Concern arose that the guidelines may not provide enough direction to ensure clarity for those seeking election to CRNBC's Board or in supporting those elected and appointed members of the Board.
1 The Seven Principles of Public Life, developed by the
UK Committee on Standards in Public Life have been adopted into CRNBC's board governance practices to provide guidance to staff and board members when considering their actions in the public interest.
